I hope you’re having a great week! My family and I just got home after a lovely long weekend in the charming, Stars Hollow-esque hill country town of Boerne where some of our dearest friends live. I had the pleasure of having lunch with an old friend from film school, and let me just say, I am so excited to get cracking on a few new creative projects…with the help of my husband Ben! Stay tuned!
In reading news, I recently finished Julie Berry’s novel If Looks Could Kill which cleverly combines the mythologies surrounding Medusa and Jack the Ripper. I absolutely loved Berry’s bestseller, Lovely War, and so I had high hopes for her latest release, but sadly, I found it disappointing. I wish I could recommend it, but again I do heartily recommend Lovely War, especially if you love Greek mythology!
Last night, I began a novel about the apostle Paul, practically titled Paul by Walter Wangerin, Jr. It’s too soon to say what I think of it, but I’ll keep you posted!
As for nonfiction, a friend of mine recommended I read 1st and 2nd Maccabees. I love this from 1st Maccabees chapter 2:
“Fear not then the words of a sinful man; for his glory shall be dung and worms. To day he shall be lifted up and to morrow he shall not be found.”
Gotta love –and rightly fear— the justice of God!
Alrighty, onward with this week’s Top 4, which begins with a terrific sermon that’s worth your time…and on the subject of time…
YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Check out this marvelously motivating, and sobering, sermon from Johnny Ardavanis:
Numbering Our Days
REDIRECTION
“I avoid looking forward or backward and try to keep looking upward.” – Charlotte Bronte
EQUATION FOR COMPETENCE
“Failure + reflection + another rep = competence.” – Brandon Webb
BUILDING IS BETTER
“Let us ask the gods not for possessions, but for things to do; happiness is in making things rather than in consuming them. It Utopia, said Thoreau, each would build his own home; and then song would come back to the heart of man, as it comes to the bird when it builds its nest. If we cannot build our homes, we can at least walk and throw and run; and we should never be so old as merely to watch games instead of playing them.” – Will Durant
